What we are learning about this year
Saturday, September 22nd, 2007In addition to the standard reading, handwriting, math, spelling, English, and Bible, we are learning about flying creatures (the ones created on the 5th day
) and ancient history. G, C, and L all do Bible, science, and history together. As the younger ones get older, they’ll join them.
Our science book is Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Zoology I. We are still just in the first chapter, and we touched briefly on classification and just how things fly PERIOD. We’ll also learn about birds, bats, flying reptiles, and insects. I haven’t decided if I want to cover insects now or later in the spring. It’s sort of hard to find insects when there is snow on the ground.
L raised some butterflies last year, and one of our projects at the end of the insect chapters is to raise some more. She had so much fun doing that, and I know she’ll be excited to do it again! I just might wait till spring to do insects – last year it was barely warm enough in JUNE to release them!
Our history curriculum is Tapestry of Grace, and this year we are covering from creation to the fall of Rome. Right now we are learning about ancient Egypt. Then we’ll move onto what all went on in the Books of Moses. We’ll also learn about other ancient civilizations: the Indus Valley, ancient China, ancient Americas, Greeks, Romans, Persians, and more about ancient Israel.
Currently on Wednesday afternoons the older 3 are taking sign language classes. They’ll be doing it for 4 more weeks. These have been REALLY neat. The lady teaching them is an ASL interpreter, and she is teaching them the real deal. She has explained that facial expressions are PARAMOUNT, positive signs move up, negative signs move down, etc. C has really gotten into the facial expression thing. He corrects me every time I sign a question. “Mom, you’re supposed to do this to your face [furrow your eyebrows] when you ask a question.”
I think we are starting to get into the swing of things for our new school year. We’ve got 3 full weeks under our belt and are starting to get into the groove. Now to keep the momentum going!
